BROCK SAMSON

So this is Brock Samson from the Venture Bros. If you don't know the show then this guy will mean nothing to you but to the fans like myself he's a God. It's made of Super Sculpey Firm/Apoxy Sculpt. It's about 8" tall. I plan on casting it in resin and painting it up with colors congruant to the shows color pallette. Perhaps a second one will be painted up to look like cold cast bronze. We shall see.

*Fan Art* Not for Sale or Reproduction. This one's just for me.

Barbara Asher V.2

This is made out of Aves Apoxy Sculpt. It is 18" high and painted with Games Workshop Paints. The Eyes are acrylic dolls eyes.

Thank you Jeremy Bennett for commissioning this redo. Also thank you to Octavio Perez for the magnificent airbrush you gave me. It was indispensable for this piece. And lastly Amy Rutzen for helping mix my paints for me.

Achilles 01

Achilles 02

This was the first of three Greek myth figures in Chavant NSP hard. He’s 18” tall and is my version of Achilles. I wanted to show him as aggressive, arrogant, and good looking. The stance says the first, the arrogance is in the fact that he isn’t wearing his full armor, and the good looking is up to you.

Unfortunately I finished him the week after Frank Miller’s 300 came out and everyone I showed it to was like “Oh nice Leonidas!” Its not F#&!^$ing Leonidas! Oh well I should just start telling people it is and give up on the Achilles thing.

Matt Rudd Bust 01

Matt Rudd Bust 02

This is a likeness Bust of my Friend Matt Rudd in Castilene that stands 5” tall. If your looking for a story, there is none. What you see is what you get.

Octopoda Impetus 01

Octopoda Impetus 02

Octopoda (Greek meaning Eight legged) Impetus (Latin for Assault). She’s made entirely from Castilene Hard and stands 9” tall.

My original impulse was to do a stylized sculpture, something that had an animated cartoonish feel. I’m a big fan of the geometric justice league toys and that’s where this need started. However as the project went along I just felt compelled to keep adding details and things that started me down the path of realism.

So here it is, somewhere between cartoon and reality. Hopefully it doesn’t confuse you altogether. Enjoy.

Handman 01

Handman 02

Handman is made out of Super Sculpey Firm (Grey) and stands 12” tall. It was a commission by the creator of Handman and friend John Ajagbe. It’s now in his private collection in Miami FL. You can find out about Handman from John Himself at http://www.oja-art.com.

Pandora 01

Pandora 02

Pandora was the smallest of the 3 myth statues at around 16”. Again were dealing with Chavant NSP Hard but the container (Pandora’s box) was made out of super Sculpey Grey. By the time I got to her I was so relieved to be sculpting a soft female form that it went by rather quickly.

Orca 01

Orca 02

This was originally supposed to be a sculpture of a concept drawing I had done.

But when it came time to fit a harness and rider to the whale I just couldn’t do it. I felt the whale was happy enough on his own. The sculpt is much stronger in my opinion than if I had slapped a navy seal and saddle on him. Still think it’s a cool idea though. Perhaps one day.

The Orca is 20” long and stood 14” tall. He was made out of Super Sculpey and fully painted. This sculpt is currently in the private collection of my dear friend Judy from Bradenton FL. Hope you still like it Judy!

Barbara Asher 01

Barbara Asher 02

This is a stylized version of the real life Barbara Asher otherwise known as Mistress Lauren M. Wikipedia has a nice short article on her and the events that made her a spectacle. This is basically an article illustration in sculpture. It was 12”, made with super Sculpey, and fully painted. The idea here is that she was guilty but escaped conviction due to lack of evidence, that’s why the justice scale is defying gravity.

Oh just a little note here to anyone looking to attain your very own Barbara Asher sculpture, its been completely destroyed. Not on purpose but it could have been easily avoided if the gallery in which it was on display would have placed it on a solid table and not a rickety card table in the middle of the floor.

Due to the constant bumping of the table by gallery attendees, the sculpture, by increments began to lean until finally cracking loose at the knees and falling first on the tabletop and then to the wooded floor. I received it back in many, many, many pieces. Luckily the gallery was insured and did the right thing in compensating me. It however took a year and much toil to get people moving in the right direction.

Hercules 01

Hercules 02

Hercules stands 21” tall and probably weights ten pounds. He’s made out of Chavant NSP Hard and the only armature is in his legs and hips. I wanted to portray the Hercules we would have seen out in the wilderness and in the ruff distant lands were he performed a few of his great deeds.

Gun 01

Gun 02

Ah before I get into this one, if anyone has a good name for this custom (Fake) automatic pistol I’d love to hear your suggestions. I’m terrible at naming things because I’m supper critical and always end up on Thesarus.com trying out find a cool sounding name.

So this is my custom Automatic (please help I’m drowning) pistol. Its 1:1 scale, so for the people who are confused, that means actual size or life sized. It’s made out of Plexiglas and plumbers epoxy.

The protruding barrel is steel tubing and the circular shapes underneath of that are three washers and a metal fabric eyelet. If I were rich enough to screw around for the rest of my days I’d probably do stuff like this. Unfortunately…

Thank you to Mr. Eric Brock from http://www.electricsynapse.com for coming up with a winner!...

Leviticus - "the word of God"

(*Insert the price is right music when someone's name is called and they come running down to stand at a podium*)

Bench Girl 01

Bench Girl 02

This was my first attempt to create a scene. I've always been a fan of Pin-up, and especially the work of Gil Elvgren. I just wanted to sculpt a tribute to him and that’s what this is all about.

The concept is a cute girl on a park bench reading a book and minding her own business when the wind kicks up and starts to blow her belongs away. She manages to save everything but her dress. OOPS. A classic cheesy scenario that hopefully didn’t make Gil turn over in his grave.

Bench Girl 03

Hephaestus 02

Hephaestus 01

Hephaestus was the god of fire and known to the Romans as Vulcan. He is made with Primo Sculpey and stands/sits (da dump tshhhh!!!) at 13”. Primo Sculpey is marketed as the Premium Sculpey compound. This utter crap was recommended to me by a professional sculptor at the 2006 MegaCon in Orlando FL.

This person had done some wonderful things with Primo. But somehow either the batch that I used (which was about 30 – 3 ounce packages) was bad or its just plan crap. On top of the problems I had with it technically, it’s almost impossible to find it in any larger than the 3-ounce package. I must of spent a hundred bucks cleaning out the Michaels craft stores in our area to get enough and my sculptures have been crumbling to pieces since they came out of the oven.

Mother Earth 02

Mother Earth

This was my first real attempt at sculpture. It is 17” tall and made out of Super Sculpey. It was only half way done when I turned it in for an assignment. Luckily it got an A and even went on to be included into the Best of Ringling 2005 exhibit. A year later it was selected to be included in the Society of Illustrators scholarship section of the 2006 annual.

The book was released this year and unfortunately only those who received monetary awards were actually in the book. The rest of us were sent the supplemental layout a few months after it was announced. We figured that the society was just giving us a heads up as to what the section would look like in the annual. Oh well. So to everyone else who got in but didn’t appear in the mass print, I feel your pain.

As for the sculpt, its still in my possession and remains incredibly sturdy. I’ve had to move several times since its creation. Many if not all of those times I’ve had to lay it on its side or finagle it into an off center position. Not one flower or leaf has ever fallen off.
